news Bumbershoot 2009 Lineup Sneak Peek
The word is out! An early look at the 2009 Bumbershoot lineup has been unveiled including the artist roster below. If you haven’t picked up your ticket yet, what are you waiting for? An advance 3-day pass is only $80… Um, that’s $26.67 a day…and if you really wanted to boil it down, say you checked out 10 things a day (not tough to do!)… using our expert math skills, that comes out to just $2.67 per show. It’s a wonder you don’t spell “bargain,” B-U-M-B-E-R-S-H-O-O-T.
A teeny portion of the music lineup includes:
Sheryl Crow / Modest Mouse / Katy Perry / Michael Franti & Spearhead / De La Soul / Raphael Saadiq / Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan / The Long Winters / Sly & Robbie & the Taxi Gang / World Party / MSTRKRFT / Roy Ayers / Common Market / UH HUH HER / Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women / Eric Hutchinson / No Age / Matt & Kim / Dead Confederate / The Cave Singers / Swollen Members / Vieux Farka Touré / Lenka / Gang Gang Dance / Todd Snider / Holy F**k / DJ Spooky / Iglu & Hartly / Low vs Diamond / Sera Cahoone / Eleni Mandell / Carrie Rodriguez / The Honey Brothers / Natalie Portmanâs Shaved Head / Extra Golden / Cordero / Forgive Durden / Hey Marseilles / Adrian Xavier, and much, much more to be announced.
A small sampling of whatâs to come in the arts program includes:
A host of visual arts exhibits including an exploration of waste, regrowth and sustainability featuring work from Paul Miller (a/k/a DJ Spooky), among others; âDada Economicsâ from Vital 5 Productions; The Seattle-Moscow Poster Show; and an expanded Gage Drawing Jam. In addition to visual arts, the Festival will include a performance by the celebrated Pacific Northwest Ballet; the merge of high-energy tap dance and Japanese Taiko drumming from NYCâs COBU; âlike a magician, but cooler,â the magic stylings of Justin Kredible; a rare appearance by renowned Young Adult author S.E. Hinton; a poetry reading curated by Spencer Moody of the Murder City Devils; a theatrical extravaganza by Jason Webley; a literary food program hosted by acclaimed Seattle chef and restaurateur, Tom Douglas and much more. The Festivalâs complete arts lineup and much anticipated comedy program will be announced in the coming months.

Remember the days of David Lee Roth, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Third Eye Blind…now we have bands that are has-beens Sheryl Crow overrated Perry and one hit wonders Modest Mouse. What about Alice and Chains, Queens of the Stoneage. The sad thing is even looking at the Coachella festival that lineup sucks too. You have to go to england to see any good festivals any more. also, earlier someone said, “look at the cheap prices.. what a bargain.”
$26. a day is NOT a bargain.
I remember when Bumbershoot was a measly $5 a day, it was four days, for $15, you got the entire weekend, and each day had enough shows that whatever genre of music you were into you could still have a full day, AND you didn’t have to wait in line all day to see shows at smaller venues (I think waiting in line for 4 hours to attend a comedy stage is beyond ridiculous)…. Bumbershoot is losing it’s fun. I don’t even go for the music anymore, I just go for the art, because the music just isn’t worth it, and even the art isn’t what it used to be… I mean, am I the only one who misses the closing festivities? Those events (the parade, the bonfire) made Bumbershoot feel small, like a community, now it feels like a battle of the fittest.

I AM SO EXCITED!
Modest Mouse, Michael Franti & Spearhead, De La Soul, Raphael Saadiq, Common Market, and Swollen Members are going to be FANTASTIC. And there are a few musicians up there that I have heard good things about, like Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head and Dead Confederate, among others…so I will have to pick up some albums and get ready to GIG at all these shows.
No names necessary, but, to the guy who accused Modest Mouse of being a one hit wonder…Modest Mouse is not a one hit wonder, they are absolutely epic. You must be too busy wallowing over other people’s success to pay attention (everyone should be EXCITED that Bumbershoot and Seattle are becoming sought after destinations! Well, at least I’M proud of this amazing city)
So if you can’t find it in you to dig Modest Mouse, at least acknowledge them for their (semi)local roots and how tight that is going to make their show. I am sure they are about to kill it, just cause they know original fans will be there. But, if you still can’t do that, then maybe go to EndFest and keep your negativity to yourself.

Who cares if Katy Perry is a headliner — you don’t HAVE to watch her. That’s the beauty of a festival!! There will be 7-10 awesome things to see/hear while Katy is whining on the Main Stage in front of a swarm of silly, mindless conformers. Why should that bother you? The smaller shows are a more personal experience and usually better music anyway.
From my experiences in the last 2 years, the ticket price would be worth it even if I only got to see the bands at Bumbershoot I had never heard of! And I know that the OneReel organizers wouldn’t be able to get all those lesser-known gems together in the same place on the same weekend were it not for a few headliners bringing in the money from the masses.

Not a lick of Blues. No more Zydeco. No New Orleans-style music of any kind. That’s what, three years in a row now?
We used to have a Blues Stage, remember? Now we don’t even have blues acts at all. This in a town that spawned the likes of Robert Cray, the Holdens, Little Bill, and Alice Stuart, and has placed bands in the International Blues Competition in Memphis several years in a row.
You tell potential sponsors that “57% of Bumbershoot fans are age 34 and younger.” Yeah, well, what do you expect when you don’t offer anything for people over 34? Who, btw, still constitute 43% of your fans! What’s the problem, we don’t drink enough Red Bull to make your sponsors happy? Why don’t you just hang out a sign that says “Nobody over 30 who doesn’t like pop drivel need apply”?
This festival was originally conceived to feature and promote LOCAL artists. It used to be affordable to darn near everyone. Now you charge Jazz Fest prices (and you sure ain’t no Jazz Fest!) for three days of mostly national junk, presented by a bunch of Bill Graham wannabes.
You need to go back and watch Paul Dorpat’s movie on the history of Bumbershoot. Maybe it will give you a clue how you’ve emasculated this festival. You sure don’t have one now.

You should have bought the three day pass for $60! Jeez, you get, what, 15 venues or more for twelve hours a day for three days? That is a huge bargain! You get hundreds of performers and lots of other stuff too for so cheap. You’ll probably see 8 or 10 or more acts each day which works out to a few bucks per act if you bought the pass or even 5-6 bucks per act if you just pay the $50 per day. I think it is very well-worth it. Quit whining! Sheesh, Disneyland costs that much and this is 1000 times better than that. And this is only a small fraction of the lineup.

not sure why everybody seems to be hating on Katy Perry. The fact of the matter is that she had a #1, and her other two songs have done quite well too. Bumbershoot is going to add people like her to the line up to sell tickets. I can’t stand people that like to seem “cultured” and only listen to indie music that sounds like it was inspired by the dying sounds of cats. When it comes down to it, Katy Perry sells. And to response of the person claiming that Katy Perry is anti lesbian…where are your facts? Her song is fun, and if you are that uptight to take offense, then you need to get a life!

If you think this lineup is for the +40 crowd, think again. I’m 50 and have been a semi-regular at Bumbershoot for the last 20 years. I didn’t make it every year but at least 15 of the last 20 I made the trip from Bremerton all 4 days. The last couple of years have been a big disappointment and now I go one day if someone I like is playing. I used to spend a lot of money there also so I’m sure the vendors miss me. Itâs still a great festival but the music no longer appeals to me. I know that One Reel made some changes because they had been losing money for a while. I hope it works out for them.

And for those of you scoffing at acts like Katy Perry, you obviously aren’t very open minded OR aren’t aware of Bumbershoot’s history. They need to book a few higher profile acts to attract more people so that they can continue having the festival every year. There was a point when Bumbershoot almost got shut down because they didn’t have enough money. So shut your traps and see the shows you want to see and stop crying about the one’s you don’t.

Nice Bumbershoot, nice.

Theres lots of great music here if you look at artists besides the headliners. Bumbershoot has always been about having something for anybody. I personally don’t prefer katy perry or sheryl crow, but I dont have to go to thier sets. instead I can see The Long winters
or
Dead Confederate
or
Low vs. Diamond
or
De La Soul
etc. etc.

Taste in Music is Personal said…
Like or hate Katy Perry, Sheryl Crowe, Modest Mouse or whoever…this festival like many others appeals to a broad base of music fans.
It always cracks me up that some people think that the only “good” bands are the ones that don’t “sellout”, don’t appeal to the masses and don’t really have household names.
The reality is that what you love may suck to me or someone else, and what sucks to you may appeal to others. Does this make you better than someone else?
That’s what we need – a bunch of a-holes who think that they are better than others because they have different tastes in music.
Celebrate diversity.

Everyone who has something to say about how bad it’s going to be, just SHUT UP!!!! This is supposed to reflect Seattle’s music scene, not just what some headbangers want. Seattle has a HUGE range of music, so there should be a HUGE range of bands. It doesn’t matter about what just one person wants. So can everyone just shut it and hear new types of music??

most people seem to be bitching about Katy Perry. i don’t know her stuff at all but they obviously made a good choice putting her on the bill to get people talking. people, no press is bad press. if you don’t like her, see a band you actually want to instead. don’t waste your time complaining about a show you’re not even going to.

Has anyone seen the line up of San Francisco’s “outside lands” music fest? What the hell is going on in Seattle??? We can’t even get our own local bands to play in our festival, pearl jam, dave mathews band, beastie boys, incubus, black eyed peas, MIA, Jason Mraz, thievery corp, modest mouse, q tip, raphael saadiq, band of horses, tv on the radio, kinky, etc. As you might have already figure out, I’m leaving my beloved Seattle and headed to the bay area for some serious music fest. If Seattle wants to remains musically relevant, bring good musicians so the culture will continue to grow. Peace.

Frank, MIA’s comming to sasquatch, pay attention. Modest Mouse is on this year’s bumbershoot lineup, and pearl jam played Portland for the nw date on their last tour, so dont hold your breath. Y are only the chicks actually any smart about this whole thing? except Stephan, ur my hero cuz ur so eloquent. this is gonna be my fifth year, and i’ve never read these before, i had no idea people obsessed over the one or two bands they didnt like so much. what if i go and say that all the rap ur so in love with is actually worse than katy perry? if you only go see bands you like and bitch about the ones you dont, why even go? at the same time as katy perry, or sheryl crow, or Modest Mouse (awsum) are at least 5 other bands, as well as food, art, vendors, and a frigin amusement park. its seattle center for godsake!
also, to the bumbershoot guys, i would like to apologize for the fact that you are forced to read this drivel that some nerd decided was worth his time to post just so he can go tell all his friends that he’s so cool cuz he complained about something stupid that he cant change just because the real root of the problem is that he just got laughed out of his girlfriend’s bedroom when his pants dropped.
i would actually be glad if only a couple more bands that i like show up on the final bill, it gives me more time to check out the bands that i havent heard before. also the awsum food, vendors, and art.
im 17 yrs old, and im smarter than you!

Alright.
Michael Franti? There won’t be a Gorge in the background but that should still be hecka tight.
Forgive Durden playing a festival? That’ll be interesting! I look forward to it.
Good local stuff too, like a mini-sasquatch with a folk life vibe… Hence the BUMBERSHOOT part of this festival.
Long Winters, Common Market, Cave Singers, NATALIE PORTMAN’S SHAVED HEAD!! YESSS!
I’m excited, plus the price is unbeatable.
Katy & Sheryl can sing their hearts out while I am in a smaller venue that will be way less crowded due to more people being by the main stage… People like Katy Perry help the undercards ;).

I agree with arka and jeff. You guys need to get over it and deal with the bands you don’t like. if you don’t like the bands don’t go to bumbershoot or don’t go see that particular band. it’s as simple as that.

I saw Cheryl Crow at BS a few years ago in the afternoon while sitting on the astro-turf. Most of the crowd was doing other stuff like playing football, hacky-sack, talking. She is background noise for the elevator. Where is the heavy? Will there even be 1 distortion pedal stomped?
